Yogi Laksminarasimha
South India - Bronze - Height 10,3cm - 17th century
Images of Narasimha are quite rare.
In this incarnation Vishnu is depicted as the half man half beast (lion).
Here we see Him accompanied by His consort Lakshmi.
Around his crossed knees is the 'Yogi' band used in meditation, hence Yogi Lakshminarasimha.
Narasimha is sat on a pedestal surrounded by the body of a Naga.
Originally this would have extended to show a 5 or 7 headed Naga above Narashimha's head.
It is a very special and rare piece.
