Guanyin
China - bronze, lacquer and gold - High 16 cm - Ming Period 17th century
Guanyin was originally the name of Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara in China, but Chinese and folk traditions of other peoples of the Far East have added many distinctive characteristics and legends. Avalokitesvara was originally depicted as Buddha when he was still a prince, and therefore wears clothes that find their breasts and sometimes has the mustache. However, in China, Guanyin is usually represented as a woman.
