Garuda

South India - Bronze - height 24cm - 17th century

Garuda:

sacred bird and vehicle of Vishnu, symbol of farsightedness and enemy of the Naga snakes. His body is decorated with jewels, and he is kneeling in deep devotion. The bronze is an example of refined Indian plastic art. The pedestal on which Garuda rests, the bhadrapitha, denotes the importance of bronze and of iconography. Alternating elephants and serpents are supported by a tortoise resting on a square base shaped like an open lotus flower.
India, 17th century
