A gilt bronze figure depicting Mahakala
Tibet - Gilt copper alloy, turquoise and coral - height 17cm - Late 18th century
A finely made gilt bronze cast depicting the Dharmapāla Mahākāla in his version with six arms. With a wrathful expression he wears the five-skull crown to contain flaming hair. He holds in his six hands the mālā rosary, the kartika and the kapāla, but in this particular wear the drum, lasso that are characteristic of this from are lost. Behind him an animal skin is stretched out and under his feet lies Ganapati, also holding a kapāla. The composition presents fine movement thanks to the many jewels, including turquoise and coral stones, that adorn the whole figure
